Welcome!

~ Hey all! ~

This is the official site of N.K. Valek.

I’m an author working to create an extensive and beautiful world for fans and all my characters to get lost and found in someday (seeking agents).

I started this whole writing thing in 2009 when I was thirteen, roleplaying on neopets (ah, the glory days). Full commitment to the writer identity came when I read an advice page that said, “If you want to be a professional writer, you have to treat writing as a job. Write every day, even when you don’t want to.”

From that day, I’ve finished all four books in The Lost Elementalist series and several short stories to go with it. I’m now editing and revising for my debut, be it with an agent and traditional publishing or on my own in self/hybrid publishing.

As of April 2024, draft 8 of book 1 is finished and I am getting things ready for querying agents or pursuing hybrid publishing!

The Lost Elementalist

Shadows swirl where light may fade, but fire flickers in the mountains.

Four days ago, mystical shadows cut through Selenia Ki’s neighborhood, striking fear into every heart like a brush of death against the soul. Few people are brave enough to talk about the strange event, but Selenia’s starving curiosity screams for more.

Fifteen years old, she isn’t even allowed to think about things like fiery foxes, elemental powers, or alternate universes. According to her mother, imagination is an irrational and childish distraction from more useful pursuits in life. Selenia longs for the freedom of endless stars and the whisper of the dark waves that had to come from somewhere.

She doesn’t expect, however, to find a fiery fox sleeping outside her bedroom window. Neither does she expect to learn that a whole different Earth exists, war-torn and full of amazing magic that she might even have inside. Dangerous magic.

Is it worth running away for? If she loses herself in the wild, what will she find in the aftermath?

It doesn't matter. She can't go back home.

THE LOST ELEMENTALIST is Avatar: The Last Airbender meets Tangled in a 108K word crossworlds fantasy novel that features a freedom-seeking girl who chases after elemental magic from a world tainted by darkness. It calls to the younger side of the YA audience and those navigating the Upper MG world, specifically 13-16 y/olds.

For the Avatar TLA fans: Consider it like Selenia’s predicament is as if she were the Avatar in The Last Airbender world, but instead of being born in one of the four nations or missing in an iceberg, she was born in a different dimension entirely—our mundane world. Now imagine there are no non-benders in the four nations; everyone has elemental affinities. But in exchange for Selenia and her missing Avatar-like elements, a single child is born in the four nations without any bending abilities at all. And that child grows up angry. Now introduce a dangerous, forbidden, foreign element that any mundane or elemental person can acquire. A war has risen, and Selenia is at the heart.

Neurodiversity has always been an important subject to me, and my series features characters with ADHD (#ownvoice), chronic depression with anxiety (also #ownvoice) and autism (~3 sensitivity readers and lots of “ownvoices” research). It was inspired by games I used to play with my siblings and friends growing up. When the whole series is published, I’ll tell you the main fanfic that basically created the series. It’s small and petty. XD

Bonus! My betas have compared my main side characters to Beast Boy, Sokka, Naruto, and Steven Universe; Iroh and Aragorn; and Hermione.

Other Stuff!

Check out my Beta Reading Service!

I’ve also got a temporary website for my book series!

Aside from books, I’m working on a couple smaller writings.

My Instagram account is dedicated to writing challenges, prompts, and apparently a playground for my novel’s characters. On there, I’ve drafted a couple short stories that I’d love to expand and edit someday. When I’m not fulfilling a challenge or posting prompt responses, I’m often posting in my stories with non-canon commentary from my four main protagonists or four chosen antagonists about random stuff. I also share the silly things my cats do.

On Twitter, I post about writing and editing as a craft (and silly things my cats do). I share advice as well as fun moments from my own journey.

On this website, I’m posting book reviews and writerly advice!

Eventually I’m gonna edit and publish a children’s book I wrote a while back about a curious kitten that makes a big mistake.

The End!

Anyway, thanks for reading, and please make sure you’ve eaten today and *try* to get ~7 hours of sleep tonight. You’re valuable and worth the fight. Keep trying your best. ❤

Have a good!
